FEAR

Inspired by Chapter 15 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

FEAR?

Just like there’s no crying in baseball, there’s no
fear in the apple orchard. So we’ll make our last visit
to the orchard near the end of this.

But there’s plenty of Fear in network marketing – and
most of it should not be there.

Most people do network marketing every day, but they
just don’t get paid for it – and they’ve been doing it
since about age five.

They recommend and promote things they like. At age
five, it’s stuff like toys, candy, breakfast cereal,
and fast food restaurants. Later it’s movies, music,
shows, games, vacation places, auto repair, hair
stylists, babysitters, etc.

They do it all their lives – and love doing it – but
they never get paid for it.

Then they join a network marketing company who says,
“Keep doing it and we’ll pay You for it”.

…And something happens. They say, “I can’t sell! I
don’t know how to sell! I hate sales!”

“Wait a minute! Haven’t You been doing this all Your
life for free?”

“Well, yes, but now I’ll get paid for it – and I can’t
do it!”

What IS this? It’s a psychological disorder I’ve named
N.M.I.A. – Network Marketing Induced Amnesia. It’s a
FEAR Disorder. Fear of Rejection.

We have no Fear of Rejection when we recommend a
plumber (unless maybe the plumber offers to pay us for
referrals).

So what’s different? Only an imagined image in our
subconscious minds. There is no other difference in
REALITY, just our own Perception.

Ah, the famous Salesman Alarm – a program in the
Subconscious Mind that sounds something like, “Whoop!
Whoop! Whoop! Dive! Dive! Dive! Shields Up! Run! Save
Yourself! Hide the Children!”

It must have evolved from the Wild Carnivore Alarm
(part of the Survival Program). Somehow, over time,
we’ve replaced the sabertooth tiger with the
salesperson.

Do we feel like salespeople when we talk about our last
vacation, the great sale we found at a store, or the
great deal we got on a car? No, we feel great!

So, why the FEAR regarding our network marketing
company? It’s not REAL, it’s a phantom in our minds –
that’s all.

FEAR is habit taught to us. Almost the entire twentieth
century ran on the fuel of Fear. All major nations
taught their citizens to Fear their neighbors – they
were “evil” and “dangerous”. War and the threat of war
drove the engines of the world’s economy.

In the lull between the World Wars, Fear of Poverty
took center stage and begat the Great Depression. War
got the nations moving again.

The exception was the 1990’s – with the collapse of one
of the superpowers and the era of optimism born in the
1980’s – the decade was one of peace and prosperity for
most of the world.

But there is a balance – a great pendulum swinging back
and forth, preventing systems from reaching extremity.
All systems have cycles – up and down, forward and
back.

In an amazing display of Greed, leaders of systems
conspired to artificially prevent the pendulum from
swinging back – through lies and over-valuation of
assets. When the pendulum finally did swing back, it
swung back with a vengeance – and we witnessed the
destruction of their systems at the end of the last
decade, and the birth of a new era of Fear of Poverty.

New would-be tyrants fan the flames of this Fear daily,
attempting to seize a level of control which could not
be sustained in the last century.

As the pendulum swings forward again in the
twenty-teens it will be an era of HOPE. The Merchants
of Hope are leading the way.

THE DEVIL’S WORKSHOP

There is an old saying, “One bad apple spoils the whole
bunch.” It’s not just an urban legend.

Harvest is a critical time at the apple orchard. All
the prior seasons of toil – watering, fertilizing,
pruning, treating for pest and disease attacks – can be
undone without careful sorting at harvest.

When the apples are stored in containers for transport,
we must be careful to discard all blemished apples. If
an apple has mold growing on it, then the mold spores
will spread throughout the container.

A small cut in one apple hastens its ripening process –
leading to rot. A ripening apple exudes ethylene, a
gaseous hormone. The presence of ethylene in the
container excites the ripening process of the other
apples. As each ripening apple adds more ethylene to
the concentration, the effect compounds.

Likewise, giving Power to the NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF ONE
PERSON can undo all the toil of stripping away the
layers of puke to uncover the FIRST SENSE.

THE FIRST SENSE

Inspired by Chapter 14 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

THE FIRST SENSE.

I may never win this battle of words. Society insists
calling it the Sixth Sense, as if it were something
outside of normal, natural ability.

At the moment of conception, it is the only sense we
have – our connection to THE SOURCE. Babies demonstrate
the Sense – the way they are intuitively comfortable or
uncomfortable being held by different people, for
example.

Very young children seem to live in a world of awe and
wonder, unfettered by the bounds of labels. Many seem
to Sense things unseen and unheard. Their ability to
DREAM and IMAGINE flourishes, until it is gradually and
tragically conditioned out of them.

As we grow, the constant barrage of input from our five
new senses and the labels we are admonished to assign
to everything gradually overwhelm the First Sense until
it is buried beneath many layers of conditioned
experience. When it does occasionally peek out, it is
usually dismissed as irrational, supernatural, or with
less kindly labels.

How does the apple seedling, suspended in utter
darkness, know which way to send its sprout? It
instinctively seeks the sunlight and carbon dioxide it
needs to build a tree.

An apple grows around its core – the core connected to
the SOURCE tree. As it accumulates more moisture and
fruit, the burden becomes too much to hold onto the
connection. The apple falls to the ground, forever
severing its connection with the SOURCE.

Yet deep within the apple remains its core. Surrounding
the core are seeds – within each a pattern, a
blueprint, an IDEA, a POTENTIAL, a  DREAM!

We’ve come full-circle to the POTENTIAL for endless
generations of trees.

As we come full-circle in this book, arriving at the
PURPOSE, the GOAL of Hill’s entire philosophy:
Discovering and developing our SIXTH SENSE – or
uncovering and reclaiming our FIRST SENSE.

Those of us so empowered seem to always be at the right
place at the right time, to make the right choices, say
the right words, etc. We have a firm connection to our
SOURCE.

I no longer deny or ignore my INTUITION.

A few weeks ago I enjoyed a 7-day cruise with my
mentors. One late afternoon back onboard after a day at
port, I said to my cabin mate, “Johnie, I have to go up
to the midship hot tub. I don’t know why, I just have
to be there.”

At the hot tub I met a family and we visited and talked
a bit. Every afternoon for the rest of the cruise we
visited and developed a bond. We continue building that
bond because we all reside in the same town.

I still do not know how, but I feel in my gut this
relationship will play some part in my purpose to help
change the world.

I TRUST the Intuition of my mentors as well.

During the cruise Tom Schreiter said to me, “I’ll be in
Philly on the 22nd. If You come, then You can visit
with Your friends there.”

When I arrived home I booked my flight without
hesitation.

When I was in Philadelphia last November, I met and
bonded with 3 folks from a different company than mine
at Tom’s Workshop. The 3 of them posed for a photo with
Tom. We exchanged info and stayed in touch.

When I told them I would be in town on the 22nd, I
invited them to bring their friends from the company to
the Workshop. I was stunned when they all posed for a
photo with Tom afterwards – the group spanned the
entire front of the room, two rows deep!

I know not where this is going, but the best hugs I got
that evening were from folks in that group.

The Brain – Transmitter and Receiver

Inspired by Chapter 13 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Even an apple tree has a “brain”. Where is it? In the
roots? In the trunk? The whole tree? Just in the DNA?
Maybe the whole orchard together?

I don’t  know.

I’m really stretching to keep this apple orchard theme
going…

Oh well, two more lessons and I’m done with it!

I’ve realized that ALL things have CONSCIOUSNESS at
some level. There’s a big clue there to the nature of
the Universe, I think.

Anyway, the HUMAN BRAIN – amazing! We know a heck of a
lot more about it now than when old Pole Hill wrote his
book – most of  it within the past decade.

(Jerry, I don’t think Hill would respond to Pole or
Nap. He was Greener than grass – Greener than You and I
put together. Just look at Chapter 7 or 15 for
evidence. He would insist on Napoleon. I had a friend
named Napoleon who called himself Pole, but he was
hammered Blue.)

Oh, I won’t bore You with a discussion about the
workings of the brain – there are plenty of books and
articles on that.

But Human THOUGHT – that’s the thing!

What is it? How can it be transmitted and received
across thousands of miles in less than an instant? How
can prayers be answered before they are asked? What is
this medium called ETHER as the ancient Greeks named
it?

We know as much about the properties of THOUGHT ENERGY
as we do about gravity – next to nothing!

We only have an abundance of evidence that it EXISTS.

WHO answers prayers, anyway? Some mysterious entity out
beyond the galaxies?

Or do WE answer them ourselves? Are we part of a
COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS connected to the high and
low-level Consciousness of all things?

In October of 2007 the City of Atlanta was experiencing
a severe drought. Lake Lanier was running dry. They had
a three month supply of drinking water left. It was one
of the major news crises du jour.

One Friday evening George Noory asked the listeners to
his nationwide radio program to pray for rain for
Atlanta. Many folks around the world scoffed at the
experiment, but – nevertheless – it rained off and on
in Atlanta for several days.

Now, did the Thought Energy of the participants somehow
create photons that patterned themselves into hydrogen
and oxygen atoms? Or did the Energy ATTRACT existing
atoms to converge and become molecules of water vapor?
Or was it pure coincidence?

Who knows?

I’m more interested in the LANGUAGE OF PRAYER.
Effective Prayer, that is.

COMPASSION.

PASSION – an interesting word.  Although its meaning
has evolved through the ages, its root means INTENSE
SUFFERING. Hill touched on Mutual Suffering as one of
the top ten mind stimuli in one sentence from Chapter
11. I wish he had explored it further.

COMPASSION is sympathy and concern for the suffering of
OTHERS.

I’m certain many folks in Atlanta had been praying for
rain for THEMSELVES to no avail.

But when others, with no direct emotional attachment to
the outcome, prayed for Atlanta – the rains came.

What does this have to do with business and network
marketing?

E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G!!!!!!

Subconscious Mind – Your Operating System

Inspired by Chapter 12 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

The apple tree has an operating system – its DNA is
what it is and does not change. Input the right
nutrients, water and sunlight, and the tree will output
good apples. Input the wrong amounts or types of
nutrients, etc. – and the output will be wrong.

A computer has an operating system in its hardware. The
operating system does not change – it is what it is. If
You replace the system, then You essentially have a
different computer.

You can purchase or write software to handle input for
the system to process. You use input devices to give
the operating system things to do via the software –
keyboard, mouse, tablet, microphone, camera, scanner,
etc. AND modem and ethernet. (You should use careful
filtering with those last two. Stuff coming in that way
can make Your computer very sick because it comes from
other folks.)

Your operating system, though very powerful, makes no
judgments about what You or others input – it just
processes everything equally. It reflects back to You
the results of the input via its output devices –
monitor, speakers, printer, etc.

Your SUBCONSCIOUS MIND is Your OPERATING SYSTEM. It
creates Your REALITY by reflecting back to You whatever
You and others input.

EMOTIONS are the POWER SOURCE for Your system.

An interesting thing about Negative Emotions: They are
all EGO-based. All the feelings and energy are directed
INWARD. You, with no outlet, become like the Dead Sea –
incapable of supporting life.

POSITIVE Emotions are OUTWARD Flowing.

Let’s take a look at both sets of Emotions.
Hill listed the 7 Positive and the 7 Negative Emotions.
Here is the list…

Positive:
DESIRE, FAITH, LOVE, SEX, ENTHUSIASM, ROMANCE, HOPE.

Negative:
FEAR, JEALOUSY, HATRED. REVENGE, GREED, SUPERSTITION,
ANGER.

On May 5, 2009 Michael Dlouhy added PROSPERITY to the
Positive side, and LACK to the Negative side.

Basically, EMOTIONS are STATES of MIND which are felt
as ENERGY in the BODY. EMOTIONS MOVE us, MOTIVATE us,
compel our MOTION.

Human Beings are the only animals who can TRAP and hold
EMOTIONAL ENERGY in their bodies and TRANSMUTE, or
convert them into other ENERGY and STATES of MIND.

The POSITIVE EMOTIONS are associated with CREATION –
advancing health, wealth, imagination and inspiration.

The NEGATIVE EMOTIONS breed DESTRUCTION – illness,
disease, poverty, close-mindedness.

The best way for me to understand these emotions is to
compare, what I believe are, their opposites:

DESIRE is the PASSION for achieving, acquiring,
creating – whether it be a new skill, an invention, a
new level of achievement, whatever – to manifest
something from an idea.

The opposite of DESIRE is JEALOUSY – the envy of the
achievement of others. It seeks to DESTROY others’
accomplishments, rather than to build one’s own.

FAITH is simply the CONFIDENCE of KNOWING, beyond all
Doubt. We reach this STATE by living in THE NOW – the
bottomless depth of the Present Moment, where ALL is
KNOWN.

FAITH’S opposite is FEAR – the STATE associated with
the UNKNOWN. Living in the past and dwelling on the
future elicits this Emotion. Past and future are both
distorted concepts of reality – we do not KNOW the
future the way we know THE NOW, and the past is clouded
by our memories and the labels and judgements we’ve
placed on them. What we do not KNOW, we FEAR – and we
TRANSMUTE its energy into the other Negative Emotions
when we TRAP it.

LOVE is the pure JOY of BEING – connected to all that
IS. It is unconditional, cannot be lost, and cannot be
destroyed – no more than we can lose the sun on a
heavily overcast day – it still shines brightly on the
other side of the clouds.

The opposite of LOVE is HATRED. Most people mistake an
addictive clinging to an external source of affection
for Love. When this affection is withdrawn, the false
love flips to HATRED – an ongoing cycle of pleasure and
pain.

SEX is the ULTIMATE form of Human Desire, imprinted on
us by the biological imperative to further our species.
We TRANSMUTE its ENERGY into MAGNETISM, CHARISMA, and
GENIUS. It is the HIGHEST SOURCE of CREATIVE ENERGY
within our biological being. The EMOTION of SEX
promotes health, wealth and all good things to all who
receive or send it.

Opposite SEX is ANGER – the Driving Force of
DESTRUCTIVE ENERGY. It is most commonly bred by
trapping, holding and transmuting the ENERGY of FEAR.
ANGER is a toxic poison to all who receive or send it.
The ENERGY of Sex ATTRACTS, whereas Anger REPELS.

ENTHUSIASM is the ENERGY produced when PASSION is
combined with SPECIFIC GOALS. It radiates outward,
attracting resources to manifest its IMAGINED CREATION.
ENTHUSIASM is the ENGINE of PRODUCTION – akin to the
Big Bang which begat the Physical Universe.

ENTHUSIASM’S opposite is GREED – akin to a BLACK HOLE
which sucks in and annihilates all ENERGY and
RESOURCES. Just as the Dead Sea cannot support life
because its waters have no outlet, resources with no
outlet cannot support PRODUCTION. A prime example of
GREED is the irrational seeking of short-term gain at
the expense of the system which produces wealth. The
ultimate result is the annihilation of global monetary
and economic systems.

ROMANCE is the drawing together of harmonious forces,
an attraction of soul-mates like molecules of the same
element. This bonding is the root of all CREATION.

Opposite ROMANCE is REVENGE – one force seeking the
obliteration of another. Whereas
ROMANCE strengthens both, REVENGE leads to the
DESTRUCTION of both.

HOPE  is the EXPECTATION, without “rational” evidence,
of resources which induce CREATION. It is the natural
progression of Self-Evident FAITH, the wellspring of
all ACHIEVEMENT regardless of the “odds”. Strong HOPE
bends the odds in its favor.

The opposite of HOPE is SUPERSTITION – the belief in
things, without rational evidence, which induce FEAR.
Gossip, conspiracy theories, hastily drawn conclusions
– all generators of SUPERSTITION. It is a tool employed
by those who desire to hold power – enslaving others –
by seeding FEAR and DOUBT. Yup! Religious leaders,
politicians, tort attorneys, media manipulators, and
unsavory marketers – all professions infested with
adept MERCHANTS OF FEAR! (I’ll stop this paragraph
while I may yet have a few friends left.)

PROSPERITY is the STATE OF MIND which EMBRACES ALL OF
THE ABOVE POSITIVE EMOTIONS. It is the result of living
in THE NOW – KNOWING that all the ABUNDANT RESOURCES of
the UNIVERSE are at the disposal of those who RECOGNIZE
they are PART OF IT! I have known folks with limited
financial means who live in PROSPERITY.

PROSPERITY’S opposite, of course, is LACK – bred by
EGO’S denial of SELF – its seeking to be different,
unique, separate from all else. Those so inflicted with
this insanity feel a nagging longing, a sense of
disconnection, incompleteness, dissatisfaction, being
unfulfilled. They attempt to fill the void of LACK by
acquiring STUFF. When the stuff doesn’t fulfill then,
they seek MORE stuff. I have known folks with great
financial means who live in LACK.

CREATION…or DESTRUCTION. Which set do YOU choose to
FUEL Your MIND?

THE MYSTERY OF SEX… transmutation

Inspired by Chapter 11 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

What level of INTENSITY defines a BURNING DESIRE?

This chapter is disturbing to many folks for many
reasons, but the MYSTERIOUS FORCE Hill describes here
is perhaps the most “disturbing” thing of all.

EMOTION is our animal bodies’ REACTION to THOUGHT
PATTERNS which stimulate us into action, or MOTION.
These emotions are designed to ripple through us, do
their jobs, and LEAVE.

TRANSMUTATION – We humans have a unique ability to trap
and hold their emotions inside as “states of mind”, and
CHANGE, intensify, and transform them into other
EMOTIONAL STATES and ENERGY.

We maintain these states in our minds, and hold the
energy in our bodies.

For example: FEAR, which we know to be a Negative
Emotion:

Fear, by design, is actually a benign, friendly,
helpful little emotion. As animals facing mortal
danger, Fear should ripple through us, and trigger a
little adrenalin secretion to stimulate our senses and
reflexes.

When danger has passed, the fear and adrenalin should
dissipate, leaving us with a GIDDY FEELING of RELIEF.

Some folks don’t let go of this little fear, but HOLD
IT and TRANSMUTE IT into ANGER or even INTENSIFY it
into RAGE.

If we make a habit of Rage, it will KILL us. The Rage
held within our bodies becomes a TOXIC ENERGY,
poisoning us over time.

The most POWERFUL State of Mind – the Emotions of SEX,
LOVE and ROMANCE combined:

Like a coin, there are TWO SIDES to our true, whole
nature as human beings: The HUMAN, or animal, side and
the BEING, or “spritual” side.

Ever notice that most young toddlers give no thought to
running out the door bare naked to the world?

They approach the world with awe and wonder. They seem
to be very intuitive, sensing things we are unaware of.
Their imagination knows no bounds.

So, what happens to us?

At a very young age we are CONDITIONED by others to
DENY our animal side.

We become ASHAMED of our nakedness, ashamed of our
waste elimination, even ashamed of our perspiration.

Next, we are conditioned to DENY our spiritual side.

“Imagination? Dreams? Intuition? Love?… Humbug! Those
things are not mechanical or rational. There is no
place for them in our world view.”

Our Egos are trained to believe we are unique,
separate, better or worse than everyone else.

This insane separation causes us pain – because deep
inside, we KNOW who we should be.

We feel a nagging longing, a sense of disconnection,
incompleteness, dissatisfaction, being unfulfilled.

This is the source of the state we call LACK.

We attempt to fill the void of Lack by acquiring STUFF.
When the stuff doesn’t fulfill us, we seek MORE stuff.

There is one thing we do to abandon our denial of our
animal side. The “biological imperative” kicks in and
our program to reproduce overrides the program of
denial.

When we engage in Sex, we ABANDON our shame of
nakedness and perspiration – we REVEL in it! We enjoy
the animal connection with another animal.

This MOST POWERFUL of all animal desires and drives,
alone, can propel our thoughts to a very high level of
vibration – when we TRANSMUTE it from the physical and
into the MENTAL.

But Sex, by itself, leaves us yet unfulfilled. We’ve
only satisfied our animal side for a moment. We may
blame this LACK on our partner and seek other partners.
Again, MORE “STUFF”.

Add in the two Emotions from our spiritual side:

LOVE – Most confuse an addiction to an object of
affection with Love.

REAL LOVE is the reaching for and embracing of the pure
Joy of Being, connected to ALL being. It cannot be
destroyed, cannot be lost, and is unconditional. It is
like the sun, constantly shining even behind the
clouds.

ROMANCE – the connection to the Source Heart via the
joining hearts of two soul-mates.

When we COMBINE THE ANIMAL EMOTION OF SEX with the
HEART EMOTIONS OF LOVE AND ROMANCE, we abandon our
denial of BOTH sides.

We become WHOLE, COMPLETE, FULFILLED! Our aware
Consciousness soars to heights we forgot were possible.

We are exhilarated! We feel we are a GENIUSES – that
ANYTHING is possible!

Bottle THIS state of mind – this ENERGY – Transmute
it…and, OH WOW!

We walk into a room and heads turn our way, children
reach out to touch us, folks mingle near us and hope we
will talk to them.

They are drawn to us like moths to a flame, or bees to
apple blossoms. We have the ATTRACTION Hill was writing
about!

Power of the Mastermind

Inspired by Chapter 10 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

How does the MASTERMIND work?

All things are connected and, by nature, seek to
cooperate in HARMONY.

The trees in the apple orchard work together to alter
the pH balance of the soil, the ideal balance for apple
growing. The soil provides anchors for and delivers
nutrients and water to the trees’ roots. In EXCHANGE
for this SERVICE, the trees drop their leaves in autumn
– providing fresh nutrients for the soil.

The soil shelters earthworms who enjoy a diet of leaf
pieces. In EXCHANGE for this SERVICE, the earthworms
aerate the soil and aid in processing the nutrients for
the soil’s fertility.

In spring the trees blossom together creating an
irresistible attraction for bees who pollinate the
blossoms, enabling seed and fruit production. In
EXCHANGE for this SERVICE, the trees give the bees
nectar for their honey-making industry.

Humans working in the orchard ward off pests, treat the
trees for diseases, and guide their growth. In EXCHANGE
for this SERVICE, the trees give the workers oxygen,
shade and, of course, apples!

In all these exchanges, is there some level of
CONSCIOUSNESS at work here? You decide!

We humans, through our nature, likewise exchange
THOUGHTS – and we do it regardless of distance. We do
it instantly, without a delay of even a nanosecond.

On the live call when we discuss this subject, some of
us will look at an image I created. Other participants
on the call will SEE the image BEFORE we look at it!
Indeed, some already SAW the image weeks ago, when I
first IMAGINED it.

I’ll not delve into WHAT is the mysterious force behind
this natural ability. That discussion is for another
day. Let’s just stick to HOW it works.

We are all connected through a common ancestor. I often
ask folks how many races of people there are on this
planet.

I get a variety of answers, but the truth is… There
is ONLY ONE:

The Human Race. We have evolved into many ethnic groups
– diverse due to our geography and cultures. Yet we all
remain CONNECTED by our common bond – right down to our
DNA.

The HARMONIOUS language of our connection is COMPASSION
– the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE we have for each other.

The Force which blocks many from experiencing this
connection is EGO. Ego, the Father of GREED, LIES, and
DISTRUST, erects walls of separation between us –
interrupting the flow of our NATURAL HARMONY.

My good friend Jerry Butterworth would give Ego another
name – and I would agree with him.

Careful studies of the influence of prayer in the
Middle East show that the square root of one percent of
a population can affect the belief and behavior of the
entire population, at least temporarily.

So, doing the math, any two of us – working together in
complete HARMONY – could affect the belief and behavior
of 400 folks without saying a word to them!

Hey! Play with the math and realize the POWER and
POTENTIAL we all have TOGETHER, fellow Merchants of
HOPE!

The Sustained = The Continual
Effort = Work
Necessary = Absolutely Essential
to Induce = to Bring Forth
Faith = Complete Confidence

So, we could say, “PERSISTENCE – The Continual Work
Absolutely Essential to Bring Forth Complete
Confidence.”

Okay, after considering all the options, I CHOSE to
keep the apple orchard. I made a grown-up DECISION,
backed by COMMITMENT and ACTION.

Now, I know there will be blizzards, late springs, cool
summers, diseases, pests, and an idiot neighbor running
down my fences from time to time, but I will not quit!
When a grown-up DECISION is made, quitting is not an
option.

PERSISTENCE follows DECISION – it means I will not be
distracted by colorful brochures about pears, oranges,
kumquats, or any other dazzling income opportunities.

I do not see this orchard as an “Income Opportunity”.
HA! There are much easier ways for me to make money (at
least until I get caught).

Yes, Hill talks about MONEY CONSCIOUSNESS – but all
throughout this book he drives home the concept of
EXCHANGE. There is a balanced equation…

But FIRST, and always first, there is the SERVICE I
will perform in EXCHANGE for the monetary reward I will
receive.

My FOCUS must always be on SERVICE – it is the only
side of the equation I control.

Yes, GOALS are important – they are a measure of the
amount of SERVICE I must provide to reach them.

In the orchard business it is the quantity and quality
of apples I must provide. My FOCUS is on GROWING the
best and most apples I can grow.

I continually test for better ways to grow them, but
never at the expense of the PROVEN METHOD I already
KNOW WORKS! THAT is where I PERSIST.

Decision- The Mastery of Procrastination

A grown-up DECISION is one made with both HEAD and
HEART – not just one or the other. My good friend Don
Smith from Denver said there are three elements:

CHOICE, COMMITMENT, and ACTION.

It takes a long time for apple seedlings to grow-up and
become an income-producing orchard, and the effort does
not stop there – the orchard must be maintained.

Choice without Commitment is not a Decision. Commitment
without Choice is dangerous. If there is no ACTION,
there was no DECISION.

How about Action without Choice and Commitment? Sounds
insane…

Alright, to be honest with You, I’m really getting
tired of this apple orchard!

I thought I made a good, sound DECISION when I started
it. I mean, apples are about the most popular and
versatile fruit – all the things made from them
(Chapter 6), and folks love to combine them with other
fruits like cranberries.

I have a contact with a great wholesale buyer who
purchases most of my crop. They have a streamlined
operation, so they can afford to pay me the best
possible price for my apples. Over the past few seasons
I’ve been amazed at how much more they’ve been willing
to pay as their company has grown in size. They have a
long-term business plan, so I know they will be here to
buy apples from my children long after I’m gone. I know
the owners of the company personally, and I trust their
integrity beyond any doubt.

But the blizzards this year have made it really hard to
get out to the orchard, and I need to check the trees
for diseases and treat them if needed. What if we have
a long, cool spring this year? Then the blossoms will
come late and the apples will not mature in time for
harvest. To top it off, my idiot neighbor ran down a
section of my fence last week with his tractor!

Wait a minute! I just got a pretty, glossy brochure in
the mail about PEARS! It’s says pears are going to be
the next big fruit. Everybody is going to want candy
pears, pear sauce, pear butter, pear cider, and even
pear schnapps. The new phrase will be, “Mom and Pear
Pie!”

I can get in on the ground floor. Woo-HOO!

Uh, oh… Isn’t growing pears a lot like growing
apples? The trees require the same climate and have
similar challenges.

Wait a minute! Here’s a brochure from Florida about
ORANGE groves! Oranges rank up there in popularity with
apples. Plus I wouldn’t have to deal with blizzards
anymore…

And, if I get bored with oranges, there are always
lemons, limes, and grapefuit. Maybe even pomegranates.

Uh, oh… Didn’t they have a lot of frost damage down
there the last two years?

Maybe I could try something sexy and exotic like
papaya, kiwi, or passion fruit. Hey, I like the sound
of that… PASSION FRUIT!

Maybe I ought to just get out of the fruit business
entirely. At least THAT would be a grown-up DECISION.

Hill says, DECIDE PROMPTLY, and CHANGE Decisions
SLOWLY. I would rather work with five people who Decide
Slowly but never waiver, than 5,000 who Decide Promptly
and give-up just as Promptly.

Oh, this chapter…

A bit overwhelming – but, if enough folks get this one
from their head to their heart, it will change the
world! The moneymaking secret Hill mentions in the
Author’s Preface is splattered all throughout this
chapter.

Not just a semester’s course, but an entire college
degree could be based on the contents of Chapter 7. The
principles of ORGANIZED Planning are here, Yes – and
also the principles of LEADERSHIP, the TRUTH about
ECONOMICS, a major wake-up call and reality check, and
the SECRET OF MAKING MONEY.

Most people believe the treasury makes money…

NO!

The treasury makes CURRENCY – ink on paper and little
metal alloy disks with hardly any INTRINSIC VALUE, but
most of it is no more than electronic bookkeeping
entries in databases.

SERVICE is what MAKES MONEY! SERVICE gives currency its
VALUE. This is why Hill devotes the bulk of this
chapter to it.

Alright, what do gold and silver have in common with
apples? You are going to love this…

They, and all raw materials, are 100% FREE for taking!
Go find it… and it’s Yours.

Certainly gold and silver are rare compared to apples –
that just means they are harder to find.

You can grow Your own apples, and make all the apple
products I mentioned in the last chapter Yourself. Your
COST is Your TIME and Your EFFORT.

Pioneer families living on the frontier of wilderness
were completely self-sufficient. They built their
shelters with the materials they found, made their own
tools, furniture, clothing, toys, and gathered their
own fuel for their energy. They hunted or bred their
own livestock, and gathered or grew their own fruits
and vegetables.

They supplied their own entertainment too. They told or
acted out stories, sang and played instruments of their
own making, and created art.

The bottom line: All their raw materials cost nothing!
Their EFFORT made the stuff useful to them. Their
EFFORT created VALUE.

As more and more families gathered in a vicinity, folks
began to SPECIALIZE. As before, all the materials were
free – but they SPECIALIZED in the SERVICES they
performed, and the goods they PRODUCED.

Folks traded goods and bartered services, negotiating
the VALUE of each EFFORT.

As civilization grew more complex and folks more highly
Specialized, trading and bartering became nearly
impossible. A barber may have no direct use for the
services of an administrator of information technology
systems, for example.

CURRENCY was the elegant solution or, as economist Dr.
Walter E Williams calls it, Certificates of Performance
– evidence proving we have SERVED each other, and have
earned a claim against the PRODUCTS of our LABOR.

Hill’s example of the 20-cent breakfast for two (1937
price) is an excellent illustration of this. I could
travel, gather and process all the ingredients myself –
and enjoy my breakfast three years from now, or pay the
dime for the SERVICES of all those willing to do it all
for me – and enjoy breakfast today.

Without PRODUCTION, Currency has no VALUE.

Imagine this scenario: The treasury prints up a bunch
of currency and distributes it to all citizens – and
nobody has to do any work to earn it.

What, I ask You, could You possibly purchase with such
cash? No one is mining, farming, manufacturing,
transporting, stocking, or marketing. What is there to
buy?

I am told gold has intrinsic value due to its rarity –
but without PRODUCTION, what could I purchase with it?

Currency is backed not by gold, but by PRODUCTION.
Credit is issued on the PROMISE of future PRODUCTION.

Monetary systems function well until they become so BIG
that the negative energy of GREED sucks the systems
dry. Hence the meaning of, “The love of money is the
root of evil.”

Those gripped by the INSANITY of GREED destroy systems
for short-term gain in their electronic balance sheets.
Then they groan about the loss of purchasing power of
each unit.

All industries are connected, as are all currencies.
Weaken one, and all will fall.

When the ancient empires fell, the world did not end.
When the Roman Empire fell, the world did not end. When
the British Empire or the Soviet Union collapsed, the
world did not end. Things change – always do, but the
world goes on.

The cure is not replacing one BIG thing with another
BIG thing.

The cure is right here – the VALUE of our MINDS and
what we PRODUCE with them – and how well we LEAD in
SERVICE.

Quantity, Quality, and – above all – SPIRIT.

The SPIRIT of SERVICE is not PASSION. It is COMPASSION!
Wherever we SERVE and LEAD, there is HOPE.

IMAGINATION: THE WORKSHOP OF THE MIND

Inspired by Chapter 6 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

CREATIVE IMAGINATION – form a conscious image of
something, and with enough EMOTIVE FORCE, manifest it
into physical reality.

The first apple seed was certainly creative.

SYNTHETIC IMAGINATION – form a conscious image of
something involving existing physical stuff, and with
enough EMOTIVE FORCE, manifest it into a new thing.

I think a lot of things came about just by messing
around with stuff, others by deliberate design.

Look at all the varieties of apples: Baldwin, Cortland,
Delicious, Empire, Golden Delicious, Green, Macoun,
McIntosh, Northern Spy, Russet – to name a few.

Stuff made with apples: candy apples, caramel apples,
apple pie, apple tarts, apple turnovers, apple strudel,
apple cobbler, apple crisp, applesauce, apple
preserves, apple jelly, apple butter, apple juice,
apple cider, apple cider vinegar, applejack, apple
schnapps, and much more.

I look at the things around me in amazement all the
time. From the simplest things: carpet, furniture,
doors, windows, walls, etc. – all began with someone’s
IMAGINATION.

More amazing stuff: I used to move my recorded music
collection around in many heavy boxes. Now the whole
mess is stored in a tiny thin box that fits in my shirt
pocket.

My entire library of books is stored in a thing about
the size and weight of a small writing tablet.

Years ago, if I wanted to phone someone from the road,
then I had to find a payphone and drop a dime. Years
before that, if I wanted to talk with someone, then I
would have had to meet with them in person.

Publishing was once a major endeavor. Now I mash a few
buttons…and what I’m writing is published!

Most amazing: The POTENTIAL, the possibility of all
things past, present and future existed many thousands
of years ago.

My theory: If it can be IMAGINED, then it can be
MANIFESTED. If it cannot be Manifested, then it cannot
be Imagined.

It matters not how fantastic the IMAGE – with an
Insatiable DESIRE, Firm BELIEF, an ORGANIZED PLAN, and
PERSISTENT Action – it WILL MANIFEST.

There is not much difference between MANIFESTED REALITY
and IMAGINATION. My concept of Reality is almost
certainly different than Yours.

If I show 10 people the same scene from a movie, then I
might get as many as 10 different Emotional reactions,
ranging from “hilarious”, to “warm and moving”, to
“glorious and triumphant”, to “sad and depressing”. It
depends on each individual’s point of view.

If I say the name, “Adolf Hitler”, then the most common
reaction I get will be something like “evil
monster/madman”. Although, 75 years ago, some might
have said, “visionary”, or “charismatic hero”, or
“savior”, or “messenger of hope”. Some of those same
folks may have said a few years later, “dangerous
mistake”. A few years earlier, “a house painter from
Austria.”

If I say the word “God” to 1,000 people, then 1,000
different IMAGES will appear in their minds. All 1,000
Images are REAL, true and correct.

I FOCUS my daily activity from a point where the thing
I am working on is already completed.

The Case of the Martial Artist, the Skeptic, and the
Quantum Theorist:

Three different REALITIES concerning an encounter with
a concrete block.

The martial artist says, “I can break this block by
focusing my CONSCIOUSNESS to a point BEYOND the block.
MIND OVER MATTER.”

The skeptic, focusing on the point of impact, says, “He
will break all the bones in his hand when he hits the
solid block – unless he has a trick block. MATTER OVER
MIND.”

The quantum theorist says, “Both hand and block are
composed of photons at the quantum level – their
solidity is an Illusion. A true believer without DOUBT
could pass his hand THROUGH the block, damaging
neither. MIND AND MATTER ARE THE SAME THING.”

Whose REALITY is true and correct?

ALL THREE ARE!
